This day in history - October 5th

Marc Garneau began his career in the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1984, he was seconded to the new Canadian Astronaut Program, one of only six chosen from over 4,000 applicants. He flew on the shuttle Challenger. Garneau later went on to become the president of the Canadian Space Agency. Marc Garneau is now serving Canada as a Member of Parliament.
